Radici

OPENED 255 DAYS AGO

Radici is a southern Italian restaurant by chef Francesco Mazzei that’s just opened in Islington.

“With Radici, I am so excited to bring the food of my childhood to my London home,” Mazzei said. He plans to serve authentic recreations of his favourite dishes and turn Radici into a go-to neighbourhood spot.

The Spot:

The restaurant is located on Almeida Street; it’s just across from the Almeida Theatre and not far from 100 Islington and Rök, two of North London’s other new restaurant openings. The space consists of the restaurant and bar, a wine room, a private dining room, and an alfresco terrace. Inside, the ambiance is relaxed and low-key; the space was designed with clean, natural décor in mind.

The Food:

The menu draws from various parts of southern Italy but is most strongly influenced by the cuisine of Calabria, from where Mazzei hails. It features dishes like baccala, or salt cod with potatoes and tomato sauce; ferrazzuoli, an eggless pasta with lamb; and involtino di fegato, or calf liver stuffed with pancetta. You’ll also find more familiar options, like pizza and a range of charcuterie and cheeses.

The Drinks:

For beverages, the focus is on wine, but a concise selection of cocktails is also available at the bar. They’re simple, clean and to the point. The Radici Aperitivo, for one, contains marsala, prosecco, bergamot and orange. The Geranium Fizz consists of geranium flower nectar and prosecco, while the Negroni Classic is gin, turin vermouth and rhubarb bitters. No frills, here – the cocktails pair with the food without distracting from it.

The Damage:

Dinner at Radici will set you back about £15 per person, before drinks. Cocktails are no more than £9; the wine starts as low as £4.50 for a glass and goes up to £10, but it can also be served by the carafe or bottle.

In a Nutshell:

Radici is just about the closest you’ll get to authentic southern Italian cuisine without going to southern Italy. It’s a labour of love, imbued with Mazzei’s childhood memories and the influence of his heritage. And its vibrant dishes, classy wine selection and affordable prices are certain to make it a local favourite soon enough.
