Paramour by Nick Smith

OPENED March 18th, 2016

To commemorate the 400th year since Shakespeare’s passing, visual artist Nick Smith has returned to London’s Lawrence Alkin Gallery with a collection of pixelated, Pantone-based artworks, following his debut sell-out show last year.

‘Paramour’, Smith’s new body of work, is inspired by erotic literature. It uses ‘colour-chip’ methodology to combine modern nudes with excerpts from the Bards’ sonnets and plays. Paramour features 28 original artworks, including 10 suggestive nudes. Smith creates images that look – at first glance – like a selection of paint charts but, at closer inspection, have accompanying words to tell a story. Colour blocks amalgamate to represent an image with the minimum information needed for your brain to recognise. The concept was inspired by the early days of dial-up internet, when images loaded pixel by pixel.

Smith is fascinated by how little detail the viewer needs to understand what something is.

As well as Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Venus and Adonis, the works feature racy text from works by the likes of DH Lawrence, Sarah Walters and EM Berens. Exploring the themes of love, desire and the admiration of the female form, each image shows juxtaposition between classic literatures and contemporary art.
