Jan

OPENED 142 DAYS AGO

After a delayed (but much anticipated) October launch, Jan finally brings flavours from the banks of the Caspian to the plates of Clapham.

It bursts with Middle Eastern spices, a medieval-style oven and lavish décor reminiscent of the Ottoman empire. Jan is a welcome novelty on the South London drinking & dining scene.

There’s no denying the Middle East is having a culinary moment, from restaurants to home pantries. Jan happily rides that wave serving miso-tahini cauliflower, sumac chicken wings, and blackened sweet potatoes to name but a few. Share these to start before promptly moving onto an army of charcoal and wood fired dishes; signature lamb chops, slow roast shoulder with pomegranate glaze, and sea bream with harissa and preserved lemons. While sweet tooths can revel in harissa ice cream with rose petals, and lemon cake with warm poached nectarines and pistachios. Saving room for dessert is advised.

The restaurant itself, seating 53, centres around the medieval charcoal and wood fired oven; out of which parade the aforementioned grillades and perhaps most importantly, the za’atar flatbread.

Guests are greeted by a mirrored ceiling and airy entrée. Whilst the second space and heart of the restaurant scream opulence; think timber flooring and heavy gold frames.

The heated alfresco terrace can also be enjoyed with a tipple in hand. An original menu boasts the inclusion of spices, delicate teas, and fresh fruit. Not least of all the restaurants own brew, so named ‘Jan beer’, made by local Bermondsey microbrewery, Brew By Numbers.
