Breddos

OPENED December 12th, 2016

Tacqueria Breddos has just launched its first bricks and mortar restaurant in Clerkenwell.

If you love a good pop-up-gone-permanent story, we’re going to give you something to taco ’bout.

Getting off the streets
breddos-4

Breddos began life as a taco shack in a Hackney car park in 2011. Since then, they’ve gone from residencies, pop-ups and Street Feast, to publishing a cook book, and even a cook-off at LA’s Tacolandia festival. Now, backed by Ennismore (The Hoxton hotel group and Eggbreak), Breddos has found permanent digs. Of course, this isn’t the first time a pop-up has gone permanent, a recent example being Smokestak.

The 40-cover restaurant is laidback and casual. In fact, they want you to feel so at home, they’re even letting you choose the music, providing a large selection of vintage vinyl, as well as a record player.

Authentically Mexican… and then some
breddos-2

Breddos makes its tortillas from scratch using corn ground in-house daily. They’ve even brought in a volcanic stone mill and a tortilla machine from Mexico. Taco ’bout commitment. (Ok we’ll stop.)

While they do all the classics, they don’t claim to be 100% traditional. This is evident from the more inventive dishes on their menu, like sea urchin tostadas and an eclectic beef tartare with a black pudding mole sauce. Sharing dishes include mutton barbacoa, as well as Mexican ‘tortilla pizzas’ called tlayudas.

Their brunch menu features blueberry churro French toast and ice-cream tacos, which might just be some of the best frankenfoods we’ve heard of lately.

For drinks, there are non-alcoholic agua frescas, craft beers and mezcal-focused cocktails. They’ve even worked with Square Root Soda to come up with a Mexican Coca Cola made with natural cane sugar.

While they’ve now got a permanent space, Breddos is staying true to its pop-up roots. The taqueria is hosting pop-ups in collaboration with taco chefs from all over the world, starting with LA’s Guerilla Tacos. Evidently, while you can take someone off of the street, you can’t ever really take the street out of them.
