Bala Baya

OPENED January 16th, 2017

Bala Baya is a new eatery in Southwark that pays homage to the all-day restaurants and cafes of Tel Aviv.

Head chef Eran Tibi was born in Israel, and his cooking is partially inspired by his mother’s.

Where?

This is far from the only new restaurant to appear in Central London recently, but it’s rarer to see something pop up in the Southwark area. Although its markets, cultural sites and businesses have made it more lively, it’s still not what most would consider a strong part of London’s food scene. But maybe Bala Baya is the start of a new influx of great restaurants to the area – we can dream, anyway.

Bala Baya is located near the old Union Street arches, not far from Gordon Ramsay’s cafe.

Why?

Bala Baya promises authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in an environment designed to recall the spirit of Tel Aviv, mimicking the atmosphere of its bustling cafes. Food is part of culture, so it’s only appropriate to celebrate culture alongside food. That’s what Bala Baya does, and the result is an energetic, refreshing new place that stands out from the rest.

What?

In the morning, Bala Baya is a bakery, but throughout the day it also functions as a pita kiosk, grab-and-go lunch spot and sit-down restaurant. Its daytime menu emphasizes their custom pita oven, which was designed by chef Tibi’s father.

While this place is decidedly casual, its evening menu offers a selection of more elaborate dishes: for example, the salmon & tahini, lamb & dumplings, and red snapper & fennel salad are some of the options available.

Try the…

The pita pockets, which come with various fillings, are the signature at Bala Baya. The combination of warm pita bread and spiced, flavourful meats and sauces is like nothing else.

Wash it down with…

Bala Baya features a Gazoz bar. Gazoz is a fruity, fizzy homemade drink that’s been popular in Tel Aviv for decades; now, you can try it here in London. It comes in flavours like plum with fig & lemon thyme and watermelon & red basil.

In their own words…

“Bala Baya is chef Eran Tibi and Sammy Shonn’s poem to Tel Aviv. It’s about an honest love between food and people. Eran Tibi’s love of Tel Aviv and its many unique eating habits inspired him to create a menu that mimics a day in the life of Tel Aviv.”

In our words…

We love people who unabashedly love food, and we also believe you can never learn too much about other cultures. Bala Baya, with its sense of creativity, its emphasis on flavour and home cooking, and its welcoming ambiance is a winning new addition to the city’s food scene.
