Babaji Pide

OPENED

ALAN YAU’S DUCK + RICE, TO OPEN THIS MONTH, IS ONE OF 5 ANTICIPATED FEBRUARY OPENINGS

Now, listen here, you refined Just Opened London lot, we know how much you like keeping up to date. You like it so much that you check in with Just Opened London more commonly than your own in-laws. It’s a good job you do, because on this Monday before Christmas – the weirdest time of all to open a restaurant – we can reveal that Yau’s new pad is launched.

Throughout the year, we hunt as best we can to post about new openings, but sometimes, and particularly in the case of esteemed restauranteur Alan Yau, we leave empty-handed. Before today’s official launch, emails to Yau’s ‘people’ were unreturned, so much so that we’ve had to rely solely on walks past the Soho building housing Babaji these past months to get any sort of update. Now Pide, Yau’s Turkish restaurant designed – like his Busaba Ethai – to bring a novel food type to the masses, is open, we can reveal that it is indeed truly different, exciting and hype-deserved: the meze lamb and aubergine, the ice cream sandwich and the Turkish coffee are musts, asides the gorgeous open kitchen. From the grill, Spinach and Rice Stew rubs shoulders with all manner of stewed chicken and beef dishes that’ll connect London with the lesser celebrated foods of Turkey, the cuisine of Yau’s wife, as it happens.

And then there’s the enunciation lessons. It’s BABA-JUH, not BABI-GI! Eluding press releases, opening dates and physically pronouncable names – it’s a Yau thing.

Don’t forget to check out the Duck & Rice, another of Yau’s retreats.
