Antipodea

OPENED 240 DAYS AGO

Thought Aussies only did coffee and brunch? Think again. Antipodea, an all-day restaurant by the team behind Brew Café, has just opened in Kew Village.

With places like Timmy Green and Dickie Fitz, London’s food scene has seen its fair share of influence from Down Under. So you may already be familiar with Brew Café, which has five other sites – impressive for an independent. But this opening is not another Brew meets Kew.

Antipodea is located in a single-story red-brick building that used to be a post office. Now, you won’t be sending any post here, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be anything to write home about. Case in point: the surroundings. The 80-cover restaurant was designed by Caulder Moore, but put together by the group’s own construction team. Inspired by its proximity to The Royal Botanical Gardens, there’s horticultural wallpapering and plenty of greenery, but contrasted with concrete bar tops and metal framework. The intimate dining area boasts its own fireplace, overlooking the glass-lined open kitchen.

Feed your wanderlust

Of course, Antipodea has taken a cue (or should we say ‘Kew’) from Brew, especially in terms of the “well-travelled” menu. This is largely thanks to the eclectic background of the chefs at the helm, James Brown and Moran Etedegi. This synergy is reflected in the inventive dishes, which include an Indo-pacific Barramundi, served with miso mash and Asian dashi-butter. The vegetarian options, like the Bengali Aubergine and Tofu Salad, are similarly exciting. Also available are Brew favourites like Turkish eggs with hung yoghurt and hot chilli butter. Whatever you do, be sure to save room for the chocolate soufflé topped with Pasha floss.

100% Homemade (just not by you)

Wish you had the time to cook more? You’d love Antipodea’s Home Brew products. The ‘Made by Brew, Finished By You’ concept lets you take home ready-made favourites. There’s fancy stuff like lobster risotto and more homey classics like lasagna. Other products include Anzac biscuits, Lamingtons, breads, and cured meats.

To go with the food, there’s a full wine list, as well as a cocktail menu. Try the Hairy Canary, their yellow Bloody Mary made with pressed yellow tomato juice. Their non-alcoholic offering includes fresh juices, smoothies and of course, Brew Coffees.

Antipodea is clearly proof that Aussies can do more than good coffee and brunch. While Australia may still be a day’s travel away, with Antipodea, it just got a little closer.
